"Here in this body are the sacred rivers; here are the sun and the moon and all the pilgrimage places ...
I have not encountered another temple as blissful as my own body." - Saraha

Somatic Healing
In today's rapidly changing world everything moves, develops and transitions at lightning speed. We as a society have become so accustomed to this instantaneous patterning that we often overlook the consequences of going too fast. When it comes to self-care, health and recovery from trauma, people need to slow down and really apply their full attention to the process.
Somatic healing applies this principle to each of the four main parts of a person's being: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Somatics is the applied science of balancing these four primary aspects of human life in order to bring awareness to the internal bodily processes which govern each person's health and recovery. When a patient undergoes somatic therapy, their health practitioner, physician, psychotherapist and/or psychologist, will work with them to create a positive and prosperous experience.
Somatics have allowed many people to see themselves more clearly, to make better choices and to have confidence, all through the healing process that somatic therapy creates. Patients with severe trauma from their childhood can benefit from this form of healing as well.
Somatic healing is a type of therapy which helps to resolve trauma-related problems by concentrating on body sensations and movement. It is believed that much like animals have to face life-and-death situations, that after suffering a traumatic experience, humans also have to release tension - which is stimulated by the autonomic nervous system - to fully recover from the trauma.
While healing physically can be an easier process (since you can visualize improvements in your physical health), mental and emotional health can be trickier to gauge since its effects are not so immediately obvious. If you are struggling to move on from a traumatic event, then investigating somatics as a new form of therapy could be very helpful.
Uncovering deep peace and self love and understanding is incredibly important in maintaining good spiritual health. Buddhists utilize somatics when practising walking meditation. Meditation in general is considered to be helpful in boosting one's mental and spiritual health. Movement medicine, dance therapy, movement meditation, or whatever you choose to call it all fall under the same umbrella with their premise of tapping into the innate and deep wisdom of the body - and that which is stored within it.
